Our Purpose
For more than four decades, the International Bowhunting Organization has worked to promote, encourage and foster the sport of bowhunting.
Founded in 1984, the IBO has grown from a group of dedicated bowhunters with a vision for the future of the sport into an organization serving bowhunters, competitive archers, families, clubs and communities across the United States and beyond.
While much has changed since those early years, our purpose remains the same: creating opportunities for people to enjoy archery and bowhunting while helping protect the traditions and future of the sport.
1984
The International Bowhunting Organization was created in 1984 by a group of bowhunters who recognized the need for an organization dedicated to the growth and preservation of bowhunting.
From the beginning, realistic 3D archery became an important part of that mission. It gave bowhunters an opportunity to practice the skills required in the field while providing a competitive environment where archers could test themselves against others.
The creation of the IBO Triple Crown helped establish a competitive tournament series that would become one of the most recognized traditions in 3D archery.
Growth of the IBO
As participation increased, so did the reach of the organization.
The IBO World Championship became the culmination of the tournament season, bringing archers together to compete for an IBO World Championship.
A qualifying system developed through clubs and events, creating opportunities for archers from different areas to participate in the IBO tournament program and earn their way to championship competition.
Over the years, IBO events have welcomed generations of archers—from first-time competitors and youth shooters to experienced bowhunters and some of the most accomplished competitors in 3D archery.
More Than Competition
Competition is an important part of the IBO, but it has never been our entire mission.
The organization was founded by bowhunters, and protecting the opportunity to bowhunt remains an important part of who we are.
Through education, partnerships and advocacy, the IBO works alongside individuals and organizations that support bowhunting, wildlife conservation and responsible participation in the outdoors.
The IBO also recognizes the importance of introducing new people to archery. Youth programs, Genesis archery opportunities and family participation help create pathways for the next generation to become involved in the sport.
IBO Today
Today’s IBO combines the traditions that built the organization with new opportunities designed to grow archery and bowhunting for the future.
IBO programs and events include traditional 3D competition, the IBO National Triple Crown, the IBO World Championship, state and regional opportunities, and the IBO 3D Challenge & IBO Bullseye program.
Through our clubs, State Representatives, volunteers, instructors, event hosts and members, the IBO continues working to make archery accessible to competitors of different ages and experience levels.
Whether someone picks up a bow because they want to become a bowhunter, compete for an IBO World Championship, shoot with their family or simply enjoy archery, we want there to be a place for them within the IBO.
Looking Forward
The future of bowhunting depends on participation.
That means supporting today’s bowhunters while welcoming tomorrow’s archers.
As the sport evolves, the International Bowhunting Organization will continue looking for ways to strengthen its competitive programs, expand opportunities for youth and adults, support its clubs and members, and advocate for bowhunting and the outdoor traditions that have brought generations of people together.
Promote, Encourage and Foster the Sport of Bowhunting.
